Day 4!

We left Siem Reap this morning for the flight to Phnom Penh. The flight was only about 40 minutes and lots of fun. Love flying!!!!!!!! Phnom Penh is a bit more cityfied than Siem Reap with more tarred roads and buildings. The traffic is utter chaos of course. Ha Ha!!There were heaps of people in the city because the king was in town for a big Cambodian festival holiday. The city is very quaint with lots of buildings showing the colonial French influence. Lots of shutters and wrought iron work window grills and fences. The buildings in Cambodia are not allowed to be taller than the temple at Angkor Wat. We toured the Emerald Pagoda where the floor is made of silver and the buddha is made of jade and emerald. A magnificent place of many buildings and gardens which is part of the kings palace. Also toured a museum with lots of ancient statues rather reminiscent of Egyptian statues though they weren't as old as those. Had a wonderful lunch then toured the Genocide Museum. What a place that was. The museum is in the old prison that was used to keep and torture prisoners during Pol Pot's regime. There are cells in there and gallows and photos of the dead as well as display cases of skulls. A truly moving and sad place. Hard to believe that such things can happen. So many millions killed. There were many men there with legs missing because of land mines too. Apparently there are still over a million unexploded land mines in the country. Some would have deteriorated and not blow up but many are still dangerous. After that the guide thought we could do with some retail therapy and took us to a shop! The hotel here is quite nice and we decided to take a tuk tuk ride around the area before dinner. Well!!!!!!! Talk about taking your life in your hands, because of the holiday there was more traffic than usual so lots of horn tooting and near misses! It was fun of course. Dinner was at a hotel around the corner and really nice as well. Tomorrow we are leaving Cambodia for Vietnam. This is the most amazing place, I love the hustle and bustle of it and the atmosphere. There is so much to see if we had more time. Oh well, maybe another time!
